Consens.Us

BY MANDAFOUNIS

Treating a subject as complex as the one of migration in an artistic context is an almost impossible task to undertake. Following our encounter with many migrants in Geneva during the different workshops, performances and other events organized under our Danse(in) umbrella, "Consens.Us" will embrace this task.

In order to meet the demands of the exhibition "Danse(in)-Récits de migration" and create a site-specific performance based on the body in motion and the knowledge of dance and choreography, we will focus on how to conceptualise through our creative process the migrants’ narratives of the multiple realities experienced during their past and present lives.

The artistic and choreographic interpretation of such a fragile subject needs its specific set of rules in order to be addressed. By applying specific contextual as well as behavioral rules to the dancers and the spectators alike, we will knit a performative contract that will be explained to the audience at the beginning of each session. These rules will create a functional yet non fictional bubble in which the audience members will have the opportunity on the one hand to witness dance in its purest form and on the other hand to project their own imagery upon the performers.

All the dancers’ attempts will be channeled by various musical influences. The spectators will be acoustically isolated from the performers and the other audience members via the compulsory listening to an iPod randomly given to them at the beginning of the session. This sound will have to be listened to throughout the whole performance whether they like it or not.

During each session, the audience members will have to accept this moment of dance as it comes. The idea of not having the choice of what is presented to them and what surrounds them during a period of time, while having to go through it until the end, is how in this performante we artistically conceptualise the reality of impediment migrants are facing in their daily lives.

In "Consens.Us" we invite you to be part of this experiment and add your experience to the already existing discourse on the subject.
